Community
Encompassing 699 square miles, Bertie County is one of the largest counties in land mass (16 th ),
but one of the smallest in population (85 th ) in North Carolina. Within the county, there are
three elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools. Bertie County’s rural
location and small industrial base provide the ideal place for the Bertie Early College High
School to implement an innovative educational program that students would not normally
receive. Recently chosen as one of the best high schools by US News and World Report, BECHS
is a competitive destination of learning for accepted students in Bertie County.
School
Bertie Early College High School is a comprehensive four-year public high school which partners
with Martin Community College to provide dual enrollment for its students. All students have
the ability to earn two degrees – a high school diploma and an associates degree. This is
definitely a win for parents and students. BECHS was established in 2008 and graduated its first
senior class in 2012. Bertie Early College High School is accredited by Cognia.
